Aiza Marquez for Playboy Philippines Magazine May 2009 issue.

Press Release

PLAYBOY Philippines PRESS RELEASE FOR MAY 2009 Continuing the momentum from their successful 1st Anniversary issue, Playboy, the foremost men’s lifestyle magazine, pays tribute to the homeland with features on the best the Philippines has to offer! Movie and TV personality Aiza Marquez is the cover girl in a pictorial showcasing our country’s natural beauty, Portrait of a Filipina.

Readers are taken on a tour with Playboy’s look at some of the Philippines’ 7107 Destinations, while New Tastes in Old Manila are found to delight the palate with unique spins on local culinary favorites. Playmate of the Month Suan Javinez lets us fly the friendly skies and Unsung, Unheard is an in-depth look at the national sport that never was: Arnis.

Managing Editor Mikhail Lecaros visits the factory and showroom of internationally renowned furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue, and rounding out the issue is an exclusive, frank 20 Questions interview with Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Ace Durano on tourists, politics and Filipino hospitality. Also included is Hollywood funnyman Seth Rogen’s riotous Playboy Interview, along with all the regular men’s lifestyle sections and content that have made Playboy a household name.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
HOMEGROWN I’ll be honest: Following up the bonanza that was last month’s Anniversary issue wasn’t easy. Whereas our April was a tribute to the tenets that have made PLAYBOY an international icon (namely, beautiful women, lifestyle features, meaningful articles, insightful interviews, beautiful women), for May, the team decided to play things a little closer to home by highlighting the wonders of the Philippines. At any rate, we weren’t about to sit on our laurels, producing features on local travel, food, furniture, martial arts (arnis), topped off with Tourism Secretary Joseph ‘Ace’ Durano himself answering our 20 Questions.

Former flight attendant Suan Javinez proves old habits die hard, taking flight as our Playmate of the Month, and bringing everything together into one beautiful package is PLAYBOY regular Kristine Soguilon’s stunning cover of TV pesonality Aiza Marquez - the story behind which, apparently, is an adventure in and of itself. To those who thought we were tapped out, nothing could be further from the truth. To the faithful, sit back, relax and enjoy, we’ll see you again next month!

ADAM PENN Editor-in-Chief PLAYBOY FACTS In 1953, Hugh Hefner created PLAYBOY and, in the process, set the standard by which all subsequent men’s magazines would be judged. Irreverent, yet never immature; Sexy, yet never lewd, PLAYBOY would deliver on its promise of being the ultimate men’s lifestyle magazine, featuring entertainment, politics, culture, humor and sex - all presented with a sophistication and intelligence uncommon to men’s publications before or since.

EDITORIAL CONTENT

Wodehouse, Vladimir Nabokov, James Baldwin, Kenneth Tynan, Herbert Gold, T.C. Boyle, Ken Purdy, W. Literary icons who have had their works published in the pages of PLAYBOY, many exclusively, include Stephen King, Chuck Palahniuk, Ian Fleming, Roald Dahl, Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Jack Kerouac, Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Joyce Carol Oates, Tom Clancy, Margaret Atwood, Michael Crichton and John Updike.

Denise Laurel for Uno Magazine May 2009 cover

After witnessing the big reboot of Uno Magazine few months ago, now we are experiencing on what UNO should be like many years ago.But I'm glad that the young team of the magazine reshape it to fit and attract the new generation ( and also the old too). But putting Denise Laurel on the cover is a new and fresh start, for us magazine fans and readers, this is more than a hot pan cake.

I haven't bought my April 2009 issue yet, I'm still having a hard time getting a copy, because most of bookstores and magazine stand haven't got their copy in stock. I'm trying my luck later to grab one and hope I can feature the magazine here.

Will wait for another month to see the final page of May 2009, I know Denise will end other magazines cover with her killer smile. (that's right bub!)

okay.. time now to dig some more magazine.

thanks to Unomagazine.com.ph for the plurk updates

--

Read more below to check out the features and other Uno Girls

Don’t call her “The Girl Next Door” because there is more to Denise Laurel, the actress and the VJ, than one might think. Denise graces the cover of UNO Magazine’s May Summer Issue and gives a full interview on her life beyond the pretty face.

Tattoo artist Sarah Gaughler is making her mark. The Turbo Goth lead vocalist makes an impact in the music scene as she invades the band scene with their electronic pop music. 2007’s Philippines’ Next Top Model winner Grendel Alvarado makes us wonder how such a beautiful woman could have the name of a monster.

Get exclusive access to the making of the indie film “Sabungero,” starring the legendary Joel Torre, playing a man who unexpectedly finds renewal and redemption amidst the riot and clamor of the cockpit.
Plus
What do you get when you mix three Cebuanos and two Manilenos in a band? Whatever you call it, but it certainly makes good music with Franco.

And UNO Magazine editors are picking out the Best UNO Swimsuits… so far…

Star Trek movie premiere in IMAX - my movie review

The image “http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2712/1/16/7774903715/n7774903715_1664591_3349413.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
I just came out fresh from a star ship ride in IMAX in SM Mall of Asia. I almost arrived late and my eyes caught a big space war between humans and an alien race. I just saw a new beginning, a tale of different worlds that happens on different time and space. The space is vast and the sound of exploding stars and sun remain silent. But in the depth of the blankness of space is someone waiting to decide the fate of both universe.

Its just not your ordinary space adventure, but more than that a sci fi movie. Star Trek or shall I say Star Trek: rebooth or Star Trek XI to some fans, is a remake of the original tv series, I was exposed to the old series during my high school years, and because that I'm a born Star Wars fans, It took me more than 10 years to understand the concept of it. But then I finally embraced its sci fi awesomeness and thanks to a local Star Trek group for allowing me to join with them in a weekly screening to understand and appreciate more the sci fi beauty of time and space concept.

I didn't got any problem understanding this movie remake, and because that I'm already aware of the terms and story concept of the series and the characters, it drives me crazy and excited to see these cool cameos and appearances of our favorite character. I was seating with my friend Mark Cerbo, who is a born trekkie, and the guy who taught me lots of things about Star Trek, didn't failed to answer all my questions on something that I didn't understand about the movie.

As they say, the story of each of the characters were revealed here as an origin story, and big revelations that will change the history of all Star Trek. The action phase and scene is very unpredictable, It is all action and suspense, and it was less talkies just like the old series. Its a JJ Abrams film, and I totally forgot it. The sci fi-ness of it added a great visual effects and modern technology. The Imax screen will put one geek into a triple geekasm on their seat. If you ask me, I got only one geekasm, as my trekkie seat mate, he got 10 geekasm, in staring those starships and characters.

The movie might never give any problem to new fans and viewers, as the terminologies of terms were easy to understand and hear it. The introduction of each characters are shown well, and its development up to the middle of the movie will entertain them and decide which character will have a big role in the entire movie. My guess was Spock, but in the end it was someone else.
I was like watching a sci fi version of Greys Anatomy, with out the drama and sex scene, well there are funny scenes that I know a trekkie can relate. The new actors portraying the old characters never gave me a problem, I enjoyed seeing them adapt the characters attitude and humor. Mccoy's attitude is still a winner, never fail to amuse me and its interaction with the major characters make it a close feel to the Original Series.

I don't have any complain on the visual effects, yes it was great! I love on how they treated on that teleportation sequence, I just love the intro of Spock landing in his home planet using a teleportation machine. The story is just plain common, but the concept of using this story will dramatically change the future of Star Trek, I'm not sure what will be the next after this film. I just hope that they prepare the sequel right away, and don't let the new and old fans waiting for another years to get a sci fi taste from the new frontier.

If I'm going to rate this movie.
all geek glory.

I'm giving it a 5 dancing bananas out of 5.

I didn't know that I'm eating is a squash flower, at first I thought it was some kind of vegetable. The Stuffed Squash Blossoms is a light meal, very soft and easy to digest, not that salty or sweetened, and thanks to the coconut milk for making it more tastier.

Galunggong fillet fried in garlic with oil and topped with browned garlic (price P230)

One of my favorite of the last few min. and because that I don't eat galunggong fish, this fillet taht looks like a sardines helped me to eat and taste a galunggong.

Bagoong Rice

The bagoong rice includes some side dishes like this adobo meat, tomato and green mango, I only ate the rice, because i want the salty taste of the bagoong and its like a multi tasking meal for me eating rice, bagoong and meal at the same time in one scoop of rice.

Sinigang na Corned Beef
(price P420)

This is a specialty in Sentro, the taste of the tamarind juice tastes so natural and the taste of the corneed beef make it a little salty, but the deliciousness comes from the corned beef, it is light and I'm happy to eat it because I love corned beef. And oh, this is now from a canned corned beef.

Halo Halo

the big size Halo Halo with natural ingredients of beans, macapuno, pinipig and leche flan. It is much different from other Halo Halo, I was hoping for a homestyle taste but this one taste more a commercial Halo Halo. Maybe because of the macapuno that has a strong sweet taste.

Visit Sentro 1771 in 2nd floor of Greenbelt 3
and watch out for their new branch soon in Edsa- Shangi La Mall ( correct me if I'm wrong, I just can't make it sure if it is in Edsa-Shangri La Mall or somewhere in Mandaluyong)

Adidas opened up their new store in Greenbelt 3 and it was the biggest Adidas store in the Philippines. I went there with Lace to check out the stocks and also attend the opening event of Adidas. There were sports and tv-film celebrities were there to enjoy the latest offerings of the store. Lace went into a shopping spree as I met her up in the middle of the event. DJ were playing and I found myself stuck looking at those Philippines designed Adidas sneakers, it was cool to see a Philippine flag theme design and I heard that these shoes are limited.

The Adidas collection also includes the Stella McCartney and Originals by Originals. The store looks like a fashion shop and more than just a sports apparel shop. Feel free to check it out and see their latest collections by Adidas.
