THE PLAYGROUND, a project of
Masterminds Asia Comm Inc., is a lifestyle showcase that centers on street
basketball and the hip-hop culture attached to it.
This event is more than just a basketball tournament. It is not merely an
expo. This is a celebration of a game loved by Filipinos and the urbanity they
have learned to embrace through it.
Basketball is a game that has become sacred to us, Pinoys. In almost every
corner of our country, you will find a basketball court. It doesn’t even have to
be a full-sized, legitimate one. Sometimes, they just improvise with whatever
they have that could resemble a hoop. They hang it up somewhere, and voila! They
have a court.
That is what we celebrate in this event. That passion. That love for the
game. That way of life. Because for most ballers, recreational or professional,
it all started in The Playground.
On May 24 – 25, 2014 (Saturday to Sunday), The Playground Manila will open
its doors at the Metrotent Grounds, Metrowalk, Pasig City.
One of the main attractions will be the 3-on-3 streetball tournament that
will be played in an 18 & under division and an open division (no age or
height restriction). Aside from these, there will also be an invite-only VIP
division. In this category, celebrities and select personalities will get to
showcase their hoop skills.
However, The Playground extends to the lifestyle off the court. While the
games are played outside, there will be an indoor urban bazaar that will feature
the top brands in the street wear scene. Offering special deals at the event
will be brands like Sole Academy, Empire, Top Socks, Clat Rat, OBBO Socks,
Yurburds, Squeak Clothing, and more. Loads of items will be raffled out by these
brands throughout the 2-day affair.
Also inside the tent will be a pop-up tattoo parlor that will be providing
skin art services at special rates.
Food trucks and concessionaires will also be present at the venue to provide
refreshments. Taking care of your appetite will be Jamba Juice, Fruits in Ice
Cream, Big Bite, Cheese Steak Shop, Truck Bun, I Have Two Eggs, Chef Broosy, and
Chuck’s Grub. Since the theme is ‘street’, it only feels right to have wheeled
food stalls around.
And as we’ve come to learn, it is practically impossible to remove music from
basketball and its customs. So DJs from Beat Project Manila will be on deck to
serve the freshest hip-hop beats. Plus, be on the lookout as surprise DJs will
also be taking stage at the event.
Summing it all up, The Playground Manila is composed of four elements: street
hoops, kicks (and then some), beats, and grub.
This celebration possible is made possible by major sponsors: Li-Ning, 9Five,
Jason Markk, and Sneak
Peek.
Also powering the event are minor sponsors: Neff, Greyone Social, P&P
Tattoo, Brick & Mortar, Stance, Toby’s, and Spenco.
Official media partners are SLAM Philippines, Clavel, Chalk Magazine, Balls
Channel, and ABS-CBN Sports+Action.
Special thanks go out to Outback Steakhouse Acropolis, the official food
sponsor; 360 Fitness Club, the official fitness partner; Metrotent, the official
venue partner; and Gatorade, who fuels The Playground Manila.
People come together for basketball. People gather for a bazaar. Music
festivals pack a field with thousands of people. And food? Well, wherever
there’s food, there’s people.
But we’ve never really all come together for all of those. Not until now.
