The first of three "supermoons"
for 2014, where the moon could appear bigger and brighter than the average full
moon, may occur on Saturday evening (Philippine time).
Saturday's
supermoon could peak at about 7:25 p.m. (7:25 a.m. EDT), according to an article
posted on The Huffington Post.
"On Saturday, the moon will be 222,611
miles away from Earth – that's 30,000 miles closer than at its farthest distance
in 2014. The moon will be at its closest this year on Aug. 10, when it will be
221,748 miles from Earth," it
said.
It added that after Saturday, two more supermoons are
expected this year, on Aug. 10 and Sept. 9.
A supermoon, also known as a
perigee moon, happens when a moon turns full at about the same time it reaches
perigee, or its closest point to Earth during its orbit. – via GMA

“A brighter and bigger moon will be observed as early as Thursday
night until the full moon on Saturday (July 12),” he said in an
interview.
“The moon this weekend will appear 10 percent bigger and its
illumination will be more prominent than ordinary moons. Its
illumination on Thursday night was already 94 percent and we expect that
it will reach 99 percent by Saturday,” he added.
The full moon will rise at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday and will set at 5:03
a.m. on Sunday. Its closest approach will be on July 13 at 8:28 a.m. at
about 358,258 kilometers (km), Mendoza said.
A super moon also brings with it higher-than-usual tides. PAGASA said
high tide, particularly along Manila Bay, at around 10 a.m. on Sunday
is forecast to reach 1.46 meters. - Yahoo! News
