Gandang Kalikasan, Inc. (GKI) through its brand Human Nature, is the fastest-growing
social enterprise in the Philippines. Founded in November 2008 by Anna Meloto-Wilk and
Camille Meloto, two daughters of Gawad Kalinga founder Tony Meloto, Human Nature is
guided by the principles of being PRO-PHILIPPINES, PRO-POOR and PRO-ENVIRONMENT.
It produces natural and organic personal care products which are 100% made in the
Philippines and 100% free from harmful chemicals.
Leading Filipino social enterprise brand Human Nature is spreading the love.
Human Nature’s top-selling product, the 100% Natural Citronella Bug Spray, will be the
rallying point for thousands of dealers all over the country as the holiday season begins.
From October 11 until December 31, 2010, 100 percent of the proceeds of the Citronella
Bug Spray will be donated to the Citronella farming community in Brgy. Kanapawan, Labo,
Camarines Norte where Human Nature sources all of its citronella needs that go into each of
the Bug Spray.
“Normally we couldn’t afford to give the entire proceeds of our best-seller away, but since
Christmas is coming and we expect our other products to do well, we’re taking a leap of faith
and giving the best of what we have to the poor! The proceeds will be used to help build
three (3) additional extractors to help the farmers expand production, construct a pre-
school, pay the teachers’ salaries and provide healthcare to the citronella farmers. The
people who are protecting our health from dengue should at least be able to see a doctor
themselves!,” says Anna Meloto-Wilk, GKI President and Co-Founder.
“A whole community can be dramatically changed and improved just by one simple
agricultural product - this should give hope to every poor farmer and teach the Filipino
consumer to love Filipino products. We have chosen not just to give a pittance, but rather to
give our "first fruit", our best-seller ENTIRELY to the poor, in the belief that they need it more
and that God will bless our business in other ways. If businesses can be inspired to think this
way and share more with their poorest suppliers, the whole country can quite easily
change,” adds Dylan Wilk, GKI Vice-President & Co-Founder.
In addition to donating 100% of the proceeds of its best-selling product, Human Nature
together with the Philippine Federation for Environmental Concern (PFEC) and the
Kooperatiba ng mga Maliliit na Mangniniyog ng Barangay Kanapawan (KMMBK) have
recently signed a MOA sealing Human Nature’s commitment to help the citronella farmers
in their 1st phase expansion of their citronella farms from 7 hectares to 20 hectares.
The expansion and continuous growth of Human Nature is a story that is more than just
about the growth of one company. As a stable and sustainable Philippine model of a social
enterprise, Human Nature is mindful that it carries Filipinos and their country along with its
journey of success. As Anna puts it, “Human Nature is about loving the Philippines, loving
the environment, and loving our families, as we provide only the safest and purest world-
class ingredients for them. We hope that you will find a sense of peace and purpose knowing
that your everyday choices have a positive impact on the poor, our country and our planet.”
