Obatzda
A Bavarian cheese delicacy. It is prepared by mixing two thirds
aged soft cheese, usually Camembert and one third butter. Sweet or hot paprika
powder, salt, pepper is the traditional seasoning as well as a small amount of
beer.
Bratwurst
“Wurst” means sausage and “brat” derives from “brato”, the Old
High German word for hacked meat. The name "Bratwurst" most often refers to a sausage made from pork in a natural casing
and is grilled or fried in a pan. It is a favorite in Germany, with each region
having its own specialty.
Weisswurst
A sausage that is almost white in color. It is made from veal
and pork, and it is seasoned with bacon, onions, parsley, salt, pepper, and
lemon-powder. Its texture is smooth and slightly pasty.
Sauerkraut
The most well-known German food. Sauerkraut is a finely sliced
fermented green cabbage.
Kartoffelsalat (German Potato Salad)
This dish goes well with a variety of
dishes, including schnitzel, sausage and other meat dishes.
Kartoffelknödel (Potato Dumplings)
Potato dumplings are favorite in
several regions, including Thuringia (Thüringen), Bavaria (Bayern), and the
Rhineland region.
Semmelknödel (Bavarian Bread Dumplings)
Semmelknödel are large round bread
dumplings, made without yeast. They are used as a side dish for meat, like
roasted meat or stews.
Goulashsuppe – (Goulash Soup)
Gulasch is a beef (Rindergulasch), venison
(Hirschgulasch), or wild boar (Wildschweingulasch) stew that may include red
wine and is usually served with potatoes or dumplings.
Pork Schnitzel
Is a boneless meat, thinned with a hammer (meat
tenderizer), coated with flour, beaten eggs and bread crumbs, and then pan
fried.
Apfelstrudel
Apple Strudel is a specialty of Austria and Bavaria (Bayern)
and it is known worldwide. It is a baked apple pie filled with cinnamon,
raisins, and roasted bread crumbs.
