Comic Con Asia 2018 Experience: Highlighting the Local Creative Industry and Celebrating Pop Culture in Asia

When I heard that there will be a ComicCon Asia last December 2017, I was excited and hyped because a new Comic Con is happening in the Philippines this 2018. A gathering and celebration of the best Asia’s comics, movies, toys and gaming and cosplays that fans, creative individual and convention peeps can experience.

On the initial announcement, Stan Lee will be headlining the Comic Con but due to his health, Stan Lee’s management decided to not push through. Agent Carter played by Hayley Atwell also cancelled due to her busy schedule.

But the show must go on, Comic Con Asia headliners include the Original Black Ranger Walter Jones, Hawkins’ Dacre Montgomery of Stranger Things (also a Red Ranger), Teen Wolf’s Lydia Martin Holland Roden and NBA star Stephen Marbury.

The whole creative industry was well represented during the comic convention. Creators and artists in cosplays, gaming, comics and illustration, photography gathered and showcased their talents and also shared their expertise to new and aspiring creatives.

DC/Marvel comic book artist Harvey Tolibao on one of the booth, he also conducted a workshop called “Creating Comic Book Covers and Illustrations” on one of the function rooms during the event.

Booths about digital art like video game art and animation.

Comic conventions can never be complete without the amazing cosplays from different genres of animes, comics, gaming, movies and other pop culture. Cosplay matchups were also held and with many categories based on the cosplay suit/dress materials.

Comics, Comics, comics everywhere.. At a good deal too!

Pink Ranger (the crush ng bayan during my elementary days) and the other Power Rangers.

Even if Stan Lee wasn’t there, you’ll feel the Stan Lee presence on the Comic Con. There are statues of Stan Lee, his collector’s item that were auctioned and of course the comics creations and ideas he made that influenced many comics artists and illustrators.

“Yep, still a cameo on Comic Con Asia 2018”

Stan Lee items for auction.

That’s an awesome Stan Lee bust and poster!

Me with the legendary Stan Lee!

Cool superhero illustrations!

They also highlight our local and upcoming comics artist. Mars Ravelo’s creation has a booth and also cosplayers showcasing Darna, Lastikman and Capt. Barbell. Also saw Epik Studios presenting and launching their new comics titles.

A lucky fan got a pic with 2 Darnas (and with Lastikman and Capt Barbell)!

Michael V aka Bitoy also performed an impromptu drawing while answering the questions of the fans and guests.

Now that was I call a “Quick Draw”.

This Batman drawing by Michael V only took less than 10 minutes while being interviewed by RJ Ledesma.

During the press conference of the invited celebrity guest, the Original Black Ranger Walter Jones, Hawkins’ Dacre Montgomery of Stranger Things (also a Red Ranger), Teen Wolf’s Lydia Martin Holland Roden and the voices of Overwatch characters shared their experiences and and answered questions from the media.

From a chubby and bullied kid growing up to playing a bully character in Stranger Things, Dacre Montgomery shares how he handles bullies/bashers and being Billy the bully from Hawkins.

The Original Black Ranger from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Walter Jones talked about the pros and cons of being a superhero and the impact it gives to the fans during the press con.

The cast of Overwatch character voices also enjoyed the interaction between their fans in the hit online game.

This is their first time venturing in the Comic Con scene and I must say that they have the tools and resources to make the event successful. Many local artist and brands were highlighted and the seminars for creatives that want to up their game were also great in helping the local scene for creative induals and creators. Aside from the registration woes and the long lines upon entering, I conclude that Comic Con Asia 2018 was a success on reaching new grounds and they will surely get better in the coming years.
