function() .class: Mini Web Design Conference

The image “http://images.popazrael.multiply.com/image/3/photos/583/500x500/1/PA300086.JPG?et=p85UIUTGRaKdYrO2WKmXbQ&nmid=127374997” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Last night was the 1st mini web design conference, and I arrived very late that evening for the conference, but I’m still lucky to catch the last part of the talk and meet everyone who attended the event. The mini web design conference is a talk and learning ground for web designs and also a networking hub for anyone who want to connect with fellow web designers, programmers, developers, bloggers and freelancers. The event is made by young web developers for everyone and I’m happy that they decided to form this group and share their knowledge to us and the great thing is the entrance is free, although you need to register first so that you can be included in the guest list. I don’t have any formal training and don’t have any workshop experience in making websites, but in the span of my work for making websites, blogs and also other web stuff, and realized that I just learned everything from experiences and reading tutorials on the net. But having those tutorials in my hard drive didn’t make me learn and be an expert in the field, and then there is still a need to consult and ask for mentorship for enhancing your skills and knowledge in making websites.

here's my video coverage
(to be posted later)

The topic is all about Designs (color, typography, the grid), and the speakers are Rico Sta. Cruz (Grids), Marco Palinar (Interface design), Jojo Esposa (Philippine Laws Supporting Web Accessibility), Aja Lapus (Design & Web Standards), Rick Ong (CakePHP), Regnard Raquedan (Screen resolutions), Reynaldo Mendoza (Interaction design and usability), JP Dela Torre (Introduction to iPhone Site Development). The conference ended with Reynaldo Mendoza’s keynote, and I just had a talk with JP Del Torre and told me that he will be talking on the next conference due to lack of time and it was already getting late that evening. And then everyone who attended the conference made an introduction, getting to know each other on what field we are into. ( READ MORE BELOW )

The event is not just only about making websites; it is also about usability and design interaction to the web surfers or users. That’s one of my priorities in making pages, but since that I lack the style and creativity of making it, I do fill the sites a lot of information needed by the users. But everything is still not complete for me, and I still need to learn more. And I’m glad that the first mini web design conference is held and it was a success, the conference is for us who need to learn more and share some tips to others, it’s a great idea to make the industry more healthy and remove the concept of having a competition to one another.

I just catch Reynaldo Mendoza lecture about Interaction design and usability, and one of the greatest tip I got from him is to ask criticism and review from your friends. That’s the thing I need in making and having an opinion and constructive criticism will help you understand and study on the behavior of users. Its nice to see also my friends form the Jelly in Manila, blogging, plurkers, and from the art scene. The event is a blast! And I’m excited on the next conference, they say that if you want to talk and be a speaker, you can volunteer and get a schedule on the next event. Btw, this conference is in preparation for the big event “Philippine Web Design Conference” stated to be held on April 2009.

The conference was held inside Tech Bar/G2VC Innovation Center, 5th Floor, The Orient Square, F. Ortigas Road (formerly Emerald Ave.), Ortigas Center, Pasig City

Krispy Kreme factory tour and Spot.ph community meet up

Here's my video coverage

Manila, Philippines - October 30, 2008

We we’re at my favorite Krispy Kreme branch, and for me the Bonifacio High Street branch is the best. I usually hang out there everytime when I’m in Boni High, not just by enjoying their free wifi, but also enjoy the cappuccino and doughnut, it’s the best partner for my meal having a hot drink, much some sweets and surf the world wide web. I’m glad that they now attached a electric plug in some of the seats, and the place is very neat and comfortable. ( read more below)

Spot.ph and Krispy Kreme ( KK) invited us to have a short factory tour inside their doughnut making facility and also had a Spot.ph community members meet up after the tour. I arrived late and missed the trivia games and other talks about Krispy Kreme, but I’m glad that I made it to the factory tour and just missed a little introduction, one of the manager gave me a paper KK hat and I entered their mini factory and saw my blogger friends who are already busy taking photos and talking to one of the staff who tour us around the facility, I just saw how they made their doughnuts and how they maintain the sizes of it and their secret machine that molds everything in it. Its cute to see the doughnuts and they are treated like babies, they have this doughnut nursery, were they check and see if there is a bad mold and shape. And afterwards all the rejected molds will be discarded, repacked and will be given to the less fortunate people. I just confirmed it last night with Lace’s sister, after she told me that KK usually sponsors their community outreach program and send lots of KK doughnuts, all in various flavors to orphans. It was a great news for me, and since other doughnut store usually throw away those rejects and unsold food everyday, I used to save one or two doughnut in the past whenever I visit one establishment. But today, KK do the work..save the doughnut..save the world :)

The mini factory is open 24 hours a day, and it serves the small branches in Metro Manila, that includes the Megamall branch. There are 2 more factories in the city, that is in SM MOA and in Greenhills, haven’t been there yet, but maybe I can visit and check out the SM MOA branch, because I used to pass by infront whenever I’m in SM MOA.

I just heard from Jonel, that one of the marketing manager of KK said that there will be more KK branches will open in some of the malls, and that includes Galeria and Glorietta. After the tour we got a talk with everyone and learn more about Spot.ph and fellow members.

The big goodie is that, we took home each one box of KK doughnuts and me just grabbed that brewed coffee container and brought it with me going back to Podium ahahahaa.

Thanks to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and Spot.ph for a wonderful and educational event about doughnuts.

How to make a Halloween movie costume in a few minutes

The image “http://images.popazrael.multiply.com/image/2/photos/575/500x500/176/RG1026200803.jpg?et=EH%2CYOWugoA2B4yp9TlkfSg&nmid=125252845” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

For the last minute of your day and you have a Halloween party to attend, and you don't have any cash or time to make your own costume. Then this guide will help you make your coolest Halloween costume ever!

Every Halloween I dress up as the movie character of The Crow, no name for the character but the title of it is The Crow. An individual who got raised from the dead by a crow in order to avenge its death and its love one. The movie is shown during the 90's, if you are not familiar about the character, you can still watch some clips and trailer in Youtube. Just watch the first movie starring the late Brandon Lee as The Crow, who was killed during the taping of the last scene of the movie, shot to death by real live bullet, because in one of the movie scene, The Crow is standing on top of the table and challenge the gangster to shot him with guns. But one of the props gun is loaded by a live bullet, hitting him straight to the heart. (read more below)

Okay, that is one creepy and sad news, but here are some tips in making The Crow costume

1. I just bought this face crayon, a non toxic crayon in National Bookstore, the price of the face crayon is P38. You can buy one set of it, and the important color for your The Crow costume and make up is color white and black.

2. Dress all black, if you have a tight long sleeve shirt it will be the best. Tight black pants, and black boots. But if you don't have a long sleeve, you can use a t-shirt and a black jacket. It will be much better if you can borrow a black trench coat.

3. Now apply the make up to your face, you can research online about the face feature for the make up, or you can try to use my photo for the make up.

4. and then, there you go! you have your own cheapest Halloween costume for your party!
eeheheheee.

Unit Asia performed with Sitti at the Music Museum

( all photos were removed upon request by Unit Asia Management and the Japan Foundation)

A Jazz concert festival organized by the Japan Foundation – Manila at the Music Museum, they brought the jazz band called “Unit Asia”, the band is composed of 3 Japanese – Isao Miyosho (guitars), Shigeki Ippon ( bass) and Hiroyuku Noritake ( percussions), a Malaysian pianist Tay Cher Siang and a Thai saxophone Mr. Koh aka Mr. Saxman. The entrance is free and I got an invitation via Mark Cerbo from the Sittizen group, fan group for Sitti Navarro, bossa nova Filipina singer. I got there at 8pm and the show haven’t started, the place is filled with Filipino and Japanese guests and also fans of Sitti, I just heard about this event in some magazines and blogs, its great that I’m here with my group and will watch Sitti for the first time live, and its fun to joke with Mark haahaha, because he has this friendship history with Sitti before she went as a TV celeb.

The band perform as its best, and I’m really amazed that they are brought together as a band and music banded them together as UNIT ASIA. Mr. Saxman is really high
And the power of sax tunes really sing and I sang with it even that has no lyrics, I still imagine that the music of the sax is the main vocal of the music that they performed. Mr. Isao performed lots of jazzy and blues kind of music, Mr. Tay did some amazing finger tappings on those keyboards, while Mr. Shigeki blows me up out of my seat as I see his awesome drums exhibiton, and lastly Mr. Hiroyuki so cool clicking the bass, and because I’m a bass person, my attention is at his fingers, but my eyes got magnetized in seeing Mr. Isao’s guitar leads and riffs. ( read more below)

Sitti performed 4 songs that night, and I got news earlier before the show that she will sing only 3 songs, but she appeared back on stage during the encore performance. She’s very lovely and a great performer, and man…Cerbo was right, she is really good. I advice that you catch her in one of her performances, because it’s a lot more different seeing her perform live on TV and on stage, there is a big difference.

I’m hoping that they can have a Filipino member for UNIT ASIA, if they can get Sitti, that will be great, or any Filipino musicians here in our country, or maybe they need a violinist or a harp player.. hmm that’s too much to ask, but watching UNIT ASIA performed all these jazzy blues, all original music, and heart warming tunes really made me listen back to jazz and acoustics.

And the coverage boys of the hour spend the time shooting pics and videos while watching, ahaha I heard JP got caught by one of the staff taking pics at the event. But its okay, we love music and also Sitti, sometimes we need to go back home carrying those digital media images from an event we attended. Hope they can allow photos without flash in their next event.

VSO Bahaginan and Milestone of Hope : a celebration of the power of volunteering @ DEKADA CINEMANILA

Being a volunteer really changes a life and also your life, I was invited last Tuesday for the premiere screening of two documentary films “Panudlak and RV diaries” and its in line with the 50th anniversary of VSO Bahaginan, (Voluntary Service Overseas) is an international development organization that works through volunteers. And they bring those volunteers in developing countries to help and change the way of life by giving quality education and proper alternative learning system for those who are unfortunates. (read more below)

The film focuses on two countries, and I’m glad that there are people who are still open in volunteering in these days, the result of one’s contribution will take effect for a long time, and because that we have limited number of volunteers around the nation, the change is still slow but the developments are moving forward on the next generation.
Its really hard to be work in other countries, especially for the poor countries and cities, as I see in the documentary films, you’ll understand and feel how hard it is to be alone and push yourself to the limit, just to give and help these people who are in need of your skills and knowledge. I just learned back in college that knowledge and learning is still the big pot of gold in our lives and I’m very fortunate in having it and happy that I shared some of it during the times I tried volunteering in some schools, just to have an awareness and also the experience of transferring that knowledge to someone.

I didn’t finished the whole film that night, but because of something I need to attend and I feel great after watching the film, it is very inspiring and helpful, because everyone have the same vision and mission in helping the poor and the less fortunate. But If ever I will volunteer, I will choose our country to help those poor regions, and even that we are in the state of crisis, we know we can still help them and bring change.

Thanks to Rachel Nalus-Quintos for the invitation, congrats to your group and also to Chits Jimenez for being part of this big project.
