In perfect timing amidst the current controversy surrounding the National Artists appointments, Freeway fully affirms its support in paying tribute to past deserving recipients of the National Artist Award through its Freeway National Artist Collectors' Series. The first pocket collection of the series pays tribute to the great writer Nick Joaquin. His beautiful words are interpreted in graphic tees, hoodies, dresses, a Limited Edition Nick Joaquin Clutch and for the first time a graphic tee for MEN. Truly a collector’s edition!
It was an intimate celebration of his life with guests including friends from the press, both traditional and digital media along with members of the Joaquin family. The guests were treated to a TERTULIA (Poetry Reading) hosted by the man with the gift of gab, Mo Twister. Readers were figures of today’s scene, such as G Tongi, Jocas De Leon and Bing Villegas, who represented the Joaquin family. The event also featured the music of harpist/singer Noelle Cassandra who sang a beautiful song to open the show. While listening to beautiful melodies from the Noelle Cassandra on the harp and the magical words of the Artist, we enjoyed coffee and delectable treats from one of the best homegrown café’s in the country, Bo’s Coffee. Poetry, music and great coffee, definitely a great combination! The audience also got to learn about the artist’s personal life and Nick Joaquin trivia when Mo interviewed family member Bing Villegas and Joaquinesque literary expert, Lito Zulueta. It was nice to know that Nick Joaquin was not only a humble and generous person but that he loved his beer.
Freeway treated their guests to a raffle for Freeway Gift Certificates and everyone was able to take Limited Edition Nick Joaquin Clutch with writer’s goodies inside as a souvenir of the event. Guests were able to view and purchase right there and then, pieces from the Freeway National Artist Collector’s Series. The pocket collection itself allows the generation of today to wear a little bit of history as well as a heritage to be proud of, and look stylish doing so!
Overall the evening was intimate and something to take some pride in. Its not just a celebration of a gifted writer such as Nick Joaquin but also a celebration of the Filipino Spirit!
