I met the popular tv and internet video viral star Lola Techie at the Bayan Telecommunications event. They just introduced to us this advocacy in having us a time to teach our grand parents using technologies like the computer, internet or mobile phones. The latest project of Bayan is the Teachlola.com, it's a website portal that you can download all the modules and teaching manuals that can be helpful to all in teaching our Lolo and Lola.
Bayan conducted an informal poll and they receive a result of via Plurk and Facebook social networking sites, revealed that given the chance, 87 percent of young people would want to continue communicating with their grandparents. The same informal poll revealed that 81 percent of Filipinos are still close to their grandparents, and that 57 percent still visit from time to time. (more below)
“The insight behind Teach Lola is based on the need to strengthen relationships between the younger and older generation seemingly divided by technology. More and more young people communicate using new tools that the older generation is not familiar and is uncomfortable to use. This is our objective: to encourage the young people to teach their Lolas and Lolos these new technologies, and in the process, rekindle their relationships with their loved ones”, said John Rojo, Bayan vice president for corporate brand and communications.
The project Teachlola.com doesn't stop there online, they are having hands on training live with the senior citizens, and the activity is happening at the Bayan office in Q.C.
At the event, I saw that many are fans of Lola Techie, the media got her attention and she did lots of interviews, autographs and photo ops. I saw here also using a computer, surfing the net and even check her email. She owns also a high tech mobile phone, I just forgot the model and really happy that she is a techie. People today can adapt to new technologies and I can tell that because my parents uses the internet and mobile internet in all day of their life and I believe that many senior people can go into be techie anytime.
