Free text and calls for 15 days in Marawi City provided by GLOBE, AFP and DICT

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in partnership with the DICT and Globe Telecom is opening the Globe network to provide 15 days of free text to all network and calls to Globe and TM to its customers in Marawi City starting today to help reconnect residents and soldiers with their families

300-500 Marawi residents are still trapped in the battle zone without any contact to the outside world, while the government troops continue to risk their lives in the month long fight against the Maute terror group. Through the free services of Globe and TM prepaid customers, residents and soldiers will be able to keep in touch with their friends and loved ones even if they do not have any means of buying prepaid load.

“The donation of Globe telecom of free services to the people of Marawi is timely. Because they suffered so much and our soldiers too, of risking their lives defending the people. This project can help Marawi in many ways.” -- Rodolfo Salalima, DICT Sec

“There are many solutions can be given to the Marawi residents.  In the battlezone its hard to distribute stuff, the better way is to offer free service to the residents via the cell sites located in Marawi.  This is an easy decision to open up the services. The area is in danger and the cell site is running on gen set and they are fed with fuel in order to run. AFP will help and escort the Globe contractors to keep the cell sites running. Telecommunications are very important as a simple text "we are okay" is important already. Globe is here to support and thanks for the partnership with the DICT and AFP to help the people of Marawi City.” – Ernest  Cu, Globe CEO and President

All Globe and Prepaid customers in Marawi City will receive a text message from Globe and TM within the next few days to inform them about the free promo. The free call and text services will be available to prepaid customers and that the service does not include mobile data. Extension of the free call and text service will be re-evaluated depending on the current situation.

Globe also put up a libreng tawag service and charging center in Marawi City, also with the collaboration with assemblywoman Samira Gutoc-Tomawis, they allocated prepaid load and mobile Wifi devices which can be used by volunteers and rescuers who are helping Marawi evacuees who are staying in Iligan City. Distibution of good is also provided by Globe stores in Iligan City to the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) in Mindanao State University-- Iligan Institute of Technology which houses 300 plus evacuees

Distribution of prepaid load and cash are no longer present in affected areas in Marawi City. This is the only way to help the people by giving them the free mobile services. It will benefit the residents, soldiers, rescuers and volunteers. There are debate if the terror group will also be using it, then Ernest Cu of Globe said that even before the free service is launched, they do use the prepaid service because its available for everyone. But the benefit is for the Marawi residents and our soldiers, to help them recover and for the soldier to have instant contact with their loved ones with unlimited text and calls service from Globe.
