FCBD13 Interview: Writer Jeremy Whitely Discusses Molly Danger/PrincelessThe Free Comic Book Day 2013 Silver book Molly Danger/Princeless contains two complete stories about the petite powerhouse known only as Molly Danger and Princess Adrienne in a new Princeless adventure.
Now Jeremy Whitley (Writer, Action Lab Entertainment) talks about the new storyline, working in the comic book business, the future ofPrinceless, and much more in Freecomicbookday.com's exclusive interview.
FCBD: For those who might be new to your comic book, give a quick rundown. What can we expect to see in terms of story and art?
Jeremy Whitley: Princeless is the story of Princess Adrienne, locked away in a tower to be rescued by a handsome prince, who decides to save herself. She teams up with her guardian dragon to go rescue her sisters. Meanwhile, her father the king thinks that the knight who's going after his daughters has actually killed Adrienne.
As far as the art, you can expect to see amazing work from Emily C Martin on this book, who is absolutely knocking it out of the park with volume 2.
FCBD: What has been your favorite part of the book or character to tackle?
Jeremy Whitley: It's been enormously rewarding to have a character and series that I created and has earned so many wonderful fans. To have people, especially young girls, come up and tell me how much they love the book or the characters is really spectacular. I will never get tired of that.
FCBD: Tell FCBD fans why they should pick your book first on Free Comic Book Day!
Jeremy Whitley: It features an original story that ties into the book. People who are already reading it are in for a treat and people who haven't gotten a chance to get any of the other issues can drop in and experience the story without having to read any of the previous issues. Hopefully, once they're done with their free one, they'll want to.
FCBD: What other titles would you associated with your FCBD book? “If a comic reader likes _______ , they should pick up my title"?
Jeremy Whitley: Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Snarked, Giants Beware, Molly Danger (that's a gimme).
FCBD: What’s your favorite part about working in comics?
Jeremy Whitley: The ability to write something brand new and see it take shape before my eyes. It's really amazing to watch a script become a comic from a writing perspective. I drop off twenty-four pages of letters and get back 24 pages of beautiful artwork. You can't beat that!
FCBD: Many newcomers will pick up comics for the first time on FCBD—what was the first comic you remember reading?
Jeremy Whitley: I grew up watching the X-Men animated series and reading X-Men comics. Chris Claremont has probably had more of an effect on my life than most of my senators...
FCBD: Where will you be for this year’s FCBD? Do you have any annual FCBD traditions?
Jeremy Whitley: I will be signing (and reading other people's comics) at Ultimate Comics in Durham, NC. It's my local store and they really put on a show. If you're anywhere nearby, come on out, it's going to be a great time!
FCBD: Looking to the future of the book, is there anything you can tease about what's upcoming?
Jeremy Whitley: Yes! The second volume is coming out as we speak and will feature Adrienne and Bedelia's first real rescue attempt. The Free Comic Book Story will also be introducing a brand new character whom I've got some plans for too!
FCBD: Tell us why everyone should read comic books?
Jeremy Whitley: Because comics can show you things books can't. They can make anything happen without crazy CGI effects. You can follow a character for decades without worrying about the network dropping them. In comic books anything is possible. It's the perfect mixture of art and literature.
