86% of electricity supply in Meralco area now restored; ‘Neneng’ enters RP’s area of responsibility

By MADEL R. SABATER

Coming on the heels of typhoon "Milenyo," tropical depression "Neneng" has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced yesterday.

"Neneng" is expected to be in the vicinity of Central Luzon, approximately at 550 kms east of the area, by Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier, PAGASA weather branch chief Nathaniel Cruz warned that "Neneng" was on track to hit Central Luzon "including Metro Manila."

In a bulletin issued yesterday, the weather bureau located "Neneng" at 1,020 kms east of the Bicol region, packing winds of 55 kph near the center and moving west-northwest at a speed of 11 kph.

PAGASA said no public storm warning signals had been raised as of yesterday as the weather disturbance is "not expected to directly affect any part of the country in the next 24 hours."

"However, a surge of strong winds is expected over Bicol region, Visayas and Mindanao starting today," the weather bureau said.

According to the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) service institute, mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms are expected over the Bicol region, Visayas and Mindanao today due to the looming weather disturbance as well as the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), the weather system currently affecting the Visayas and Mindanao.

The rest of the country, however, will experience partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, "Neneng" is expected to move closer to the country, particularly in the Bicol region, this afternoon.
