Surfing in Divisoria

We went to Divisoria this morning to tour and do shopping with Lace, her mom and family friend from Cebu. I was planning to do some work today, but Lace told me to have a break and join with them in the surfing tour and shopping in 168 mall and Meisiac mall. It's been a year that I last visited Divisoria and I'm a little surprised about some changes and new establishments rising near the malls. I just saw a Starbucks branch in Binondo with Chinese words above their logo, same goes to other establishments and the street signs have Chinese translations too. (read more below)

I began to wonder and also think why would they put that there, maybe because that we can have a feel that we are in China? or in Chinatown? Hong Kong? or try to transform that area into an exclusive only for those who can read chinese? hahahaha. I began to think a lot of funny ideas, but one of the possible ideas are that they put those extra signs for old Chinese people who can't read English letters, or maybe for Chinese tourist, well the real deal is that. I don't even know.

I just found some cool items in the mall, like the figurines of Buddha, all painted in gold color and bronze, and because that I don't have a lot of money to buy all kinds of it, I just took a photo and added in my gallery, maybe soon I can start getting these cute statues, but for other people the purpose is not more than for a charm or ornaments for their stores or homes. Then I saw these carabao statues, and then Lace told me that those figurines are lucky charms for the year 2009, because next year will be the year of the Ox. We decided to buy one set of cute cartoon style Ox figurines, for a total of P180 you can take home a 4 piece set of Ox, that measures inches haahaha. But the large ones are a little pricey for me, so we decided to get the small version.

There are also anime toys, statues and gashapons available for sale in the malls, I was surprised that there are already anime toy store inside those tianggee types, and all are originals, but some are bargained, while others are wholesale items that maybe come from Singapore, and also but not the least an unlimited stocks of knock off toys ahhahaha. Its funny that they know sell pirated version of Ben 10, but it sucks to see those because I'm not sure if those plastic pirated toys are non toxic and free from lead. Our local government should take actions about that and local toy distributors should see this and not BLAME toy buyers about the rapid spread of pirated toys.

We just spend the whole day hanging out on two malls, ate in a food court area, bought 2 happy meal Madagascar 2 toys, bought this pirate skull tshirt ( and will go back there soon to grab the Sepultura tshirt, if they are confirmed to perform here), and food from Eng Bee Tin.

The place were kiampong is sold, stores with Chinese word signs, Kalesa roaming with the jeeps, traffic cameras aiming at those MMDAs, massive traffic, motorized pedicab, bargained briefs, buy one take one shirts, pirated dvd, wholesale for grabs and delicious castanets, that's Divisoria... I suggest you go there, buy your early items for your Christmas party and kringles, because on the next coming days, you won't even see a dropped peso coin in the middle of a rush buying crowd.

so after the Divi tour, we went to SM MOA and have dinner in Tempura, then later on I almost die of the yummy treat at Starbucks.

Obama-Mc Cain caricature

"A little doodling while watching, reading and listening to the news ...." - Richie

Here's a caricature art done by Richie Mendoza. He is a caricature artist who did the 2007 Senator Candidates Caricature

if you are interested to have any caricature art commission, you may email Richie at jedimasterrichie (at)

I just found out yesterday afternoon that Obama won the 2008 U.S. presidency election and the taxi driver just told me after I hop on and drive me all the way to SM MOA for the Digital Filipino Web Awards 2008. He just confirmed it via listening to the AM radio, and I'm surprised that he won and I know many of you here are in favor of Obama to be the U.S. president. Then during my talk with the taxi driver, he just shared his opinion that what will happened to the U.S., I told him about this big change campaign, or sometimes I call it Embrace Change, popularized by the Skrull invasion from the Marvel Comics' Secret Invasion cross over.

I'm not really sure if the big turn over will have a big change that easy, but I'm hoping that everyone will go back to normal and I'm glad that this race to presidency is over, and I haven't got to talk to my family in the U.S. about this upcoming change. hmmm.

congratulations to Obama and more power!

Pablo Banila is a viral marketing stunt for Gatsby

I just found it today in my blog, after an anonymous blog comment revealed that Pablo Banilo scare in the internet and the social networking sites is only a viral marketing stunt for Gatsby hair wax. After checking back his official blog site, it make sense already on why he post again all those photos with different kind of hairstyle and one video in youtube displaying all that hard long hair, and also why he always never update his blog, I mean regularly, I know many people will be interested to know more about him, but months ago I sent him an interview via email after he found my blog post about him in, but he just redirected me to this multiply journal brawl flooded with comments and post by viewers.

It is clear to me that this is just viral marketing campaign for Gatsby, I'm really sorry that someone in your field squealed and reveal it in a one liner comment post, but we can't tell yet if it is true or not, because I don't have any evidence that it is a Gatsby viral marketing, but when you look at his blog and photos, you'll notice that it will make sense already.

Gatsby or not. or maybe some other hair gel, this viral marketing stunt will give a shock to everyone when the real deal comes out.

"It's a viral marketing campaign for gatsby hair's the mat and hard variety, the one in the black canisters " - insider ( a blog comment posted here)
so for those who are scared of Pablo Banila or Paolo Bantolo, don't panic, because the name is like a version of lonelygirl15 of, and all of the yearbook scan in his blog, all of those are fake and if it is really a scanned print, why is it that it is very clean and looks like it very fresh and perfectly rendered in photoshop ?

we can't tell yet, but let's wait for the proper official to reveal this.

This is more fun to discover after the Eraserheads reunion concert rumor hehehehe.

After getting this news in my blog, I immediately share this to my plurk blog post
and people are not happy to, because it is automatically FAIL

Pablo's reply via plurk

"This should not be surprising (: People have been desperate to franchise and promote under my name, and that is my intention too (:, I recently accepted an exclusive interview with Philippine Daily Inquirer. That should make everything clear. That Gatsby thing isn't true., And, Azrael, you should ask sofimi about that yearbook spread LOL, And the link I gave you was pointing to my explanations you happened to not read (:,

to attend the Web Awards 2008 Web Awards
I'm fixing my stuff and myself in preparation for the Web Awards 2008 that is to be held in Taste Asia, SM Mall of Asia. It will be a long day of award ceremony and some lecture/talks about blogging and information technology.

My blog Azrael's Merryland is one of the finalist under the magazine category, I was surprised that my blog got in after passing all those websites requirements such as keywords strength, page rank, loading, script errors and many more. I just found out that the judging and nomination are much more different and I like its style of coordinating it with their club members , who will I think judge and do the rating by its website requirements. I just don't know if my blog will make it as the winner because inline with the magazine category is a list of other finalist who are top magazine websites and online news sites. But its okay if ever I lose, its a great experience to be nominated for the 2nd time and be a finalist for the 2nd time. And thanks to all my blog readers and supporters for making this possible.

Here are the finalists competing for the Magazine category:

I'm still here in our dining table typing this blog, but in the few minutes I'll take a bath now and proceed to the venue. I heard that the even is expecting at around a 100 attendees, wow!.
you can visit the 2007 winners page for the list of last year's Web Awards.

Ok. that all for now, will post an update later with photos and video as usual.

Miss Earth 2008 - long gown competition - my coverage

check out below for the photo coverage and video interview

Last Tuesday was the evening for the long gown competition of the Miss Earth 2008. The event was held inside the PAGCOR Theater in Paranaque City. I’m so excited to attend and watch the evening event and also witness on how they will present those lovely Miss Earth 2008 candidates wearing their glamorous long gown. The competition is very tough and they got maybe around 15 judges seated infront of the stage, armed with pencils and tabulation paper. I got a little bit late on the target meet up and after a few minutes of my arrival in PAGCOR I was guided by Mr. Gary Viray of PAGCOR to join with the rest of the group to have dinner at the VIP area, I was with Ms. Janette Toral and Mila of PAGCOR, we had our dinner there and waited for the others to arrive. ( read more below after the link)

I’m still puzzled that day and clueless on what will be the turn out of the program, but Mr. Viray told me that they didn’t know and we will be inside in a few minutes after our dinner to find out on what will be its turn out, and got so excited and prepared myself on how to take good photos of the candidates and save my appreciation of their gown style and projection. We entered the venue already and seated in the front, I was with Ken who armed himself with a Nikon D40 DSLR, and me a little baby camera Olympus SP 500 UZ, I got carried away and got very confident in my camera gear after seeing those professional photographers seated infront of us and behind us, they are armed with super zoom powered lenses and also high tech camera, a kind of camera that every photo-hobbyist would dream to have. After testing some shots, I just discovered, that my Energizer batteries failed, and I suspected that one of the batteries got discharged and affected the other batteries, and then I heard a tick tick tick sound from my camera and that signals to me that my batteries are depleting rapidly, and after a few minutes my camera shutdown.

The image “” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

I began to panic, but I calm myself a little as I pull out a Everyready alkaline gold label extra battries and 4 of them are working fine, but I just save those extra energies for the main show, too bad that I can’t use a lot of flash, because It might drain the batteries and I must get a hold of it till the end of the show. Everything work perfectly as I did a total of 450 shots all in all, using no flash and into multi shooting, the zoom in feature of camera did a great job, and because that I don’t have any flash, I used the lighting of the stage and also take advantage of using those slave flashes from the photographers. It was great, but I just noticed that there are some shots that are blurry, then next I found out that my camera got moisted, maybe because that I forgot to clean it and check it after going down from a taxi with airconditioned, but I’m glad that it didn’t affected a lot of photos.

So I learned from today’s event is that I should charge my batteries properly, come on time, bring lots of batteries, and clean the camera and oh… bring an extra memory card, my XD card got full that time but I’m glad that Lace allowed me to bring her Casio Exilim camera that did the work for my photo op and also video blog.

The event started at 8pm and I’m not sure if it is really 8pm, but the presentation was great and they have 3 batches of candidates catwalking with their long gown entry. It was the best and they are very lovely and gorgeous. I’m still having a hard time checking out my favorite long gown, but my eyes started to check out Ms. Canada, Greece, England and Philippines, which I met them at the Clear Black Party last October 31. But I didn’t know that I’ll be focusing to Ms. Peru, Mexico and Venezuela that evening, I just did a great interview with them, did a little chat and also have a photo op with them. They are so lovely and it was a great opportunity to hear their excitement, their goals, their dreams and wishes , and also their advocacy for saving mother nature. The Miss Earth pageant is not all about beauty and brains, but its all about a cause to save the environment and to save planet Earth, all of us here are living in one planet, and we need to take a big attention to all problems and also give time to payback and take care of our natural environment and resources.

Miss Venezuela won the long gown competition, Miss Mexico, Philippines, Panama also won some special awards. Everyone are excited and don’t ever miss the live telecast of the coronation night on November 9 in ABS CBN. The coronation night will be held in Clark Pampanga.

I like to thank PAGCOR and also Digital Filipino for the invitation .

Sepultura in Manila, Philippines (?)

Just got an info that the heavy metal/thrash/death metal band Sepultura will be the guest band performer at the 2008 Red Horse Muziklaban finals. This will be their first time to be here in Manila and I'm already excited to see them to perform live and in the flesh. I'm now trying to listen back those cassette tapes and listen to the new music that they have today, because their original front man Max Cavelera is no longer the main vocalist for the band, but Sepultura continues the legacy with the new vocalist Derrick Green. Although that there is no press release yet about their visit here in Manila, let's just wait for the official news and also here in my blog.

That leaves a question mark for now if they will perform or not, but if they will perform live, are you going to watch and attend the Red Horse Muziklaban Finals at the Marikina Sports Complex?

I will post updates and confirmation soon, if the Sepultura Sepularmy will start building here in our soil.

The 4th Annual Filipino Komiks Convention 2008

The 4th Annual Filipino Komiks Convention or Komikon kicks off this month of November, and I'll be there to cover the event and also feature the good and latest independent komiks and creators here in my blog. I'm glad that we can be part of it as a media man/blogger for the coverage, and would you know that this event started when I written a concept for the 1st year of the convention, but now the event continues without me and the Artists' Den really put up a hard work in order to do it an annual event. The event for Filipino comics now grows and now the event is back!

The event concept I did was last 2005, and this note was used to conceptualize and
organize the Komikon 2005 : 1st Philippine Komiks Convention in UP Diliman.

its an old event note, but I might do a revision soon and share it again to all
this is my own formulated notes for our lecture in De La Salle University last thursday ( year 2005 ) for their LaSallian Enrichment Alternative Program (LEAP)

me and Artists' Den was invited to give lecture about "Making Business Through Comics" as for my part my topic was "Organizing Comics Events and Convention" in events organizing a comic event, here's my lecture notes based only from my experience and observation. An event concept that materializes into Komikon 2005.

read it here at

You see their works in newspapers and various magazines every single day. Comic strips are works of art that are made up of one to four panels that bring joy to a reader by making light issues of life. Many comic strips have come and gone and little is known about the artists who make them. It’s high time to re-introduce them into this new generation.

The Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas now celebrates its 30th anniversary. The group was founded on March of 1978 by artists such as Larry Alcala (Slice of Life), Hugo Yonzon Jr.(Sakay and Moy, Little Toto), editorial cartoonists Edgar Soller, Boy Togonon, Edd Aragon, Pol Galvez, Tito Milambiling (Kusyo at Buyok), and Roni Santiago (Baltic and Co., Planet Op Di Eyps). The group worked with various NGO’s, government leaders, malls and restaurants, and schools. Annually, members have been sent to Japan to join a forum for Asian cartoonists. Under the current president, Boboy Yonzon III, SKP has a long list of activities planned such as publishing art books; attending conventions abroad, holding local events, exhibits and contests for its members. With the changing times the group wishes to expand its membership especially with the growing number or online comic artists.

Learn more about the rich history of the lives behind the comic strips. The 4th Philippine Komiks Convetion (KOMIKON) highlights the Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas on November 22, Saturday at the U.P. Bahay ng Alumni, U.P. Diliman, Quezon City. Get to know the artists and grab the opportunity to have caricatures drawn. The limited edition Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas Roster Book published last July will be available at the event.

Eraserheads The Reunion Concert 08.30.08 CD ALBUM Review
Eraserheads The Reunion Concert 08.30.08 CD

I went to the province yesterday November 1, and before that day we received a news from Odyssey Live about their early distribution of the Eraserheads The Reunion Concert 08.30.08 CD ALBUM, and I went crazy after knowing that they will release it two days early of the target November 3 official release date, or maybe they just printed a few copies to see and check on how hot the cake is after 2 months when the real concert happens. Odyssey just released the copies at 12nn of November 1, 2008 and they have 50 pcs of the CD in stock every store, Mark Cerbo texted this to me and just got his copy in Megamall, the CDs are already on display of October 31st, but they are not yet allowed to sell it to the public. The CD is available today in all Odyssey record bar for a price of Php 305. ( read more story and see photos below)

The cover of the cd is sporting a black color theme and dotted matrix text font, the inside of the inlay cover is a page spread of photo gallery of the concert and Eheads, layout done by Arnold and Cynthia Arre. For me the Cd album is like a time capsule were they stored the Philippines greatest and memorable concert of an ultraelectromagneticpop band. Grab it if you missed the concert, Grab it if you love to go back to memory lane of lining up outside the grassy lot of The Fort and kicking butts with bouncers who refuse to let you in if you have a bag of Chippy and mineral water bottle and lastly dying to get a VIP pass care of your networks and band members, and falling in line in front of the ticketnet booth and trying to produce a thousand bucks for two days before the concert. See that? It’s a memory capsule ahahahah., it’s a must have item for all Eheads fan.

The CD album contains 15 tracks, all live and nicely edited. It will be better if they included the whole countdown instead of starting from 5 to 0 countdown. But all I hear is a great mix and balance audio of the music, vocals and effects. This is my 2nd time to hear a live recording of their concert, one of it was the California concert 1999 which I downloaded in schizo’s website, and this is the 1st official of the live Cd for Eheads, just correct me If I’m wrong and I just don’t know if there are other Cd of their live acts.

Many people are still expecting the DVD version of the concert, I’m not sure if they will really release that, but let’s hope that we can open up a Christmas present with a boxful of Eraserheads concert DVD, let’s wait and see if we can hear a news at Odyssey live about this DVD, because people want the video rather than the CD, but the bad side is that I already converted my CD into mp3 and transferred it to my laptop and mp3 player, the CD will be in my library or in my sister’s bag ahhahaha. Let’s just hope that the local pirateers will take advantage of the CD and sell it for only P35 in bangketa’s. Don’t buy pirates and if you saw one, report it here by posting a comment below.

Here's a preview of the music

My favorite tracks in this album are Harana and Lightyears, I just don’t know why I like it, maybe it was given an extended version during their live performance. It’s funny that you can hear the voices of the audience shouting “group hug! Group hug!”, and you’ll listen more of it on track 11 – Kaliwete. The back up vocals and other special effects for the music will be clearly be heard, and when I’m in the concert, I didn’t know that there is such other music effects, or maybe it was added in the editing of this album, or my ear is too weak to capture everything hahahah.
