Thanks to the PR of Netflix for inviting me on their first Netflix event of the year here in Manila. Im surprised that they brought here in Manila the two main stars of “YOU” a Netflix original series that are now playing on Netflix.
I was about to watch this series during the holiday vacation, but I scheduled to watch it the other week, but then Im surprised to see an email and invitation that they are going here for a promo tour and I got lucky to be selected to watch them in an event -- “A Conversation with YOU” at the Manila Peninsula Hotel.
That means I should watch the series before the main event, so It took me 3 days to finish it all. And wow!!! The YOU series is quite...scary, disturbing and some parts entertaining.
Penn Badgley and Shay Mitchell is here in Manila and they’ve answered all questions provided by Joyce Pring, its just a relaxing conversation with the two stars. Penn as Joe Goldberg the main character of YOU who star with the leading lady Elizabeth Lail as Beck, the two drags everyone in the story and this comes Shay Mitchell as one of the friends of Beck, Peach.
The story is all about stalking, using technology to get to know more about the person and also the major screw up of Joe’s plan being foiled by the people around Beck.
That’s why I call it scary because the setting is really happening in the real world.
“We are happy with the response the show has received worldwide. We have managed to entertain, thrill and scare… the show has highlighted conversations around consent, victim blaming, stalking and privacy - disturbing things that Joe does, which shouldn’t be considered normal.
I love working with Shay because we’re different, like the ingredients of halo-halo. Unity in diversity,”
- Penn Badgley
“The writing on the show is so incredible, and I love Peach's character. With vast resources and family money, she is the controlling queen bee of Beck’s inner circle of privileged friends. She has her sights set on Joe, in a way that feels oddly adversarial with Beck. Just to have that back and forth with Penn’s character is hilarious. I really enjoyed playing her,”
- Shay Mitchell
The two stars are commenting on each other about their role and working together. Shay said that it was her 2nd time here in Manila, and we heard that she has Filipino blood. I think her mom is a Filipina. She joked that she knows some Filipino words and there are times that she heard a bad word that she keep on hearing at home, which she avoid to use it here when she’s in Manila, even if its a joke to speak it. But then she teaches Penn the how-tos and they loved the Halo Halo dessert at Manila Peninsula Hotel, --- the most popular halo halo in Manila
Lots of juicy stuff happened that day, Penn did a voice acting of his role as Joe and everyone went crazy hearing his low bed room male voice trying to describe a girl as a fluffy cotton candy.
