A few weeks ago, Huawei launched a new addition to their midrange smartphone line up called the Huawei Nova2Lite and now, there is no stopping them in releasing their latest and possibly the greatest smartphone Huawei has released. The Huawei P20 Series.
I’ve watched the launch of P20 online a few weeks back prior to the launch here in the Philippines, and I have always thought that this is one of the most powerful smartphones out there today. I am very impressed with not only the specs of the phones but also the technology that they are introducing to this amazing phone. But before we talk about that…let’s see what’s up on the Launch event itself.
The event is open to the public and is very jam packed with media outfits, tech enthusiasts and casual users alike. On display are the different models of the P20 Series namely P20, P20 Pro and the P20 Lite.
They also opened doors for those who have pre-ordered the unit and also those who want to avail of the phones on the spot. Lots of people lined up on their payment booths. They also have booths for Smart Communications since they are offering the P20 Series phones in their GigaX Plans! (More on this below)
Oh and we were in for a treat as Huawei’s official brand ambassador, Pia Wurtzbach graced us with her presence during the Launch and talked about her personal experience with the Huawei P20 series powerful cameras and how it can change the pro photography landscape.
What the Ms. Universe 2015, loved about the Huawei P20 Series is how its technologies and hardware make it easy for anyone to capture amazing photos. With the flawless shooting capabilities of the P20, she said that you never have to worry about bad shots at all and that she can’t believe that it was just taken with the phone.
She also shared that she had a magazine cover shoot and that they used the P20 for the actual photo used which really demonstrates how good the camera of the Huawei P20 series really is. Metro Magazine’s EIC Geolette Esguerra shared their experience with Pia and the P20 as well. They used the P20 Pro as the camera for their anniversary cover shoot with Pia and she said that cover shoots often involve a lot of photography equipment to get the right shot but this time all they needed was the Huawei P20 Pro which fits right in her pocket.
The Earth + Lens Collaboration: A unique opportunity
Art Samaniego Jr., tech news and business tech editor for the Manila Bulletin discussed the news paper’s partnertship with Huawei for the EARTH + LENS photo exhibit held last April 22nd. It aims to showcase the beauty of Mother Nature through the lens of professional photographers and the flagship P20 and P20 Pro. He said that the EARTH + LENS event was a unique opportunity to show how the gap between professional lenses and those on the P20 Pro has virtually disappeared considering the excellent results produced by the phone.
True enough, the photo taken by the P20 Pro made it as the front page cover of Manila Bulletin.

I got to try these 3 phones for a bit during the Launch and I must say that if you’re going for the P20, better get the Pro version as it’s really great value for the price.
[Huawei P20 Pro]
Let’s talk about the P20 and P20 Pro in the mean time.
Both of these phones have the all new Leica Dual and Triple Cameras (respectively). The specs of these cameras are really top notch and definitely gunning to be the best smartphone cameras in the market. Those f stops from each lens are beasts and will do well in lowlight situations.
What sets the P20 series apart from competitors is having an AI computing power which provides users with real time scene and object recognition that automatically detects the scene or object and adjusts your camera settings accordingly. This enables and ensures great quality photographs each and every time.
Not only that, but the AI also does 4D Predictive Focus that predictively adjusts the autofocus on moving objects by tracing paths of motion with AI recognition algorithms.
This is a game changer as it will definitely make you focus more on composition and still get amazing looking photos.
Let’s also talk about Huawei’s AIS or AI Image Stabilization which is very different from OIS(Optical Image Stabilization). It harnesses the power of AI to provide users with superb image stabilization. This AIS enables users to do HANDHELD LONG EXPOSURE SHOTS. Yes, you read that right. HANDHELD LONG EXPOSURE SHOTS. What normally needs a tripod now only needs your ability to keep steady(or even not that steady) and you will still get those long exposure shots on point.
I’ve used the P20 and the P20 Pro’s camera capabilities and I am so blown away by all these features. The exposure balancing is on point, the colors are vibrant and not too saturated and the focus is very much sharp as I want it to be.
I haven’t tried the slow motion capabilities of the Huawei P20 Series but according to the specs sheet, it can slow down footage up to 960 FPS. If you think 120FPS is slow, this is CRAZY SLOW. I would love to try it out with some awesome shots.
My experience with the Photo and Video modes of the camera of the P20 Series, overall I am very impressed. As a content creator, great looking images and videos are what we need as an output on our devices and seeing the technology and having a first-hand experience with this phone really makes me wanna buy it and upgrade ASAP. Hahaha
The screen real estate is pretty hefty. The P20 series has that famous notch design and large screen space. The Huawei P20 Fits in my hand perfectly (the P20 Pro needs a bit of handling carefully as it is bigger than the P20) (do note that I have big hands as well so…)
The screen is called FullView by Huawei which features a 16.7M Colours and renders out amazing image quality. Perfect for those who wants a wider full HD screen.
The P20 Series also uses Android 8.1 with their EMUI which is really fast responding and cool designs.
For the storage space, both the P20 and P20 Pro have 128GB ROM which is pretty much more than enough for your storage needs.
Considering the price point though, it’s a bit steep but with the features and specs, it’s an investment worth taking.
Again, I would suggest to get the P20 Pro right off the bat to get the most out of the features that the P20 series has to offer. It has higher RAM and has the triple camera setup perfect for on-the-go creators and hobbyists.
Huawei is really putting in a lot of work to make their smartphones standout and be ahead of the competition and I have no doubts in them achieving it anytime soon. Innovation after innovation, this is what a smartphone company should always strive to do and keep on innovating.
The P20 Series is one of the best examples of pure innovation and I’m excited to see what’s next for Huawei and their line of smartphones. Congratulations on the successful launch!
